As you know, I was homeschooled by my mother until the age of fifteen. Looking back, I see how much dedication it took for my mom to homeschool not only me but my three older siblings. What I loved most about homeschool was observing my mothers commitment to God. She consistently started off the day with daily prayer, reading the bible and teaching us about God's word. At the time it did not seem like that big of a deal to me but as I matured I realized how pivotal it is to start the day of with the word of God.
Homeschooling has its pros and cons. Throughout my adolescent years, I had the privilege of receiving one on one tutoring sessions with my mother. I also had the advantage of spending as much time as I needed in one subject before moving on to the next. I did not realize until I enrolled in public school how much being in a classroom would effect me. When I was home taught transitioning from one subject to another can take as much as forty-five mins to two hours. I thank God for my mothers patience!
The part I loved most about being homeschooled was engaging with other students at church events, and other extracurricular activities. On Friday evenings our church held a program called "Awana" where children and youth gathered together to learn about God, play sports, and participate in competitive competitions for memorizing scriptures. I know this probably does not sound enthusiastic to you but being home taught meant a majority of your time is spent at home which ultimately leaves nothing but opportunity for adventures outside home. I was certainly in for a big surprise when I enrolled in public school.
My first semester of public school was nothing that I could have ever imagined. At this point in my life I was familiar with living a quintessential reality. Public school was a shocking new experience. I was surrounded by people who seemed to be so different from me. I was culture shock, people shock, any kind of shock you can think of I was. I will discuss more of this in part two tomorrow for my series of "Homeschool vs. Public School Chronicles"
Stay blessed, you are more than welcome to reach out to me through via email.
Have a wonderful evening =] <3
