Homeschool vs. Public School Chronicles Part. 2

Updated: Mar 7, 2019

Being home taught was a beautiful experience especially because I was around my siblings a majority of the day. Yes, we had our days when we argued and did not see eye to eye but the bond between us was unbreakable. My mom had her days when she felt drained and assigned quick homework assessments and called it a day. After all, she was our teacher, she did have the liberty to bend the rules. We loved those days, sometimes we bribed our mother into letting us have the day off by cleaning the entire house. Learning from home comes with flexibility but the standards were set high.

We had a two week summer vacation, a majority of the year we were in school, when we struggled with a subject we spent hours at a time practicing until we got it right. I want to say public school was easy only because the standards were not as high. I say this in the most humble way, morally the standards were not there in public school. Children are exposed to all types of corruption. On one hand, I will say this has its pros because this teaches kids to have street smarts but on the other hand I say public school has its cons because kids can no longer be kids, knowledge is at the tip of their fingers.

As I stated yesterday, public school was culture shock for me. For fifteen years of my life I was taught at home, everything I knew I learned from my siblings or parents, this came with limits. My horizon was not expanded, I lived a pretty sheltered life, the only friends I had were from church. Five out of the seven days in a week I was only learning from my siblings and parents. On one hand this was great because we were able to form a bond but on the other hand my street smarts were non existent. I assumed every student in school would be kind. I was in for a big surprise. Not only did I attend a high school that had a lack of diversity but a majority of the students were rich snobs. I could not relate to any of them. I will get more in depth with this tomorrow be sure to stay tuned for part 3 of "Homeschool vs Public School Chronicles"
